As these deficits emerge early in the disease course, they therefore require timely assessment and appropriate targeted intervention.

Aims and Objectives: This study aims to compare the effects of LSVT-BIG and the Hibalance program on gait and balance in individuals with Parkinson’s disease and to determine which intervention provides greater benefits for this population.

Methodology: A total of 56 participants with Parkinson’s Disease were recruited for a two-group, parallel, open-label, randomized controlled trial (RCT) using Convenience Sampling with Simple Random Method. Group 1 received the LSVT-BIG exercises while Group 2 received the Hibalance exercises during 16 sessions over 4 weeks. Outcome measures included the MiniBest, Dynamic Gait Index, 10 meter walk Test (10MWT) and 5 Times Sit to Stand test. Data were analysed using paired t-tests, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.

Results: Significant improvements were observed post-intervention in all outcome measures. MiniBest scores increased (15.39±2.62 to 17.43±2.15 and 16.18±3.06 to 16.93±3.04), while Dynamic Gait Index scores improved (16.61±2.78 to 18.96±2.38 and 17.43±2.74 to 18.57±2.54) in Groups 1 and 2, respectively (p< 0.05). Self-selected gait velocity increased (0.758±0.09 to 0.828±0.08 m/s and 0.782±0.12 to 0.810±0.11 m/s), fast-paced gait velocity improved (0.826 ±0.10 to 0.881±0.10 m/s and 0.855±0.13 to 0.878±0.13 m/s), and 5 Times Sit-to-Stand times decreased (15.75±2.33 to 13.82±1.96 s and 14.43±2.21 to 13.4±2.23 s) in Groups 1 and 2, respectively (p<0.05). Group 1 showed greater improvement across all outcomes, with significant differences in mean change scores between groups (p< 0.05).

Conclusion: This study concluded that both LSVT-BIG and the Hibalance program were effective in improving balance and functional mobility in individuals with Parkinson’s disease. LSVT BIG is more effective as shown by the by the larger mean improvements.

KEYWORDS: Lee Silverman Voice treatment Big, HiBalance, Parkinson’s Disease.

REFERENCES

[1].
